Dr. Paul Safonov
Personal Profile
Prior to joining SCSU Dr. Safonov had sixteen years or international scholarly experience worldwide. He worked as Senior Researcher at the Institute of Control Sciences, Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow, 1986-1999), and Free University of Brussels (Belgium, 1999-2003), He was Visiting Researcher at the Center for European Economic Research ZEW (Mannheim, Germany, 1995), University of Warsaw (Poland, 1996), Visiting Professor at the University of Campinas (Brazil, 1997-1998). and the University of Versailles (France, 2002, and 2012-13). He also was Associate Consultant on Environmental Policy for Harvard University’s Institute for International Development office in Moscow during 1995-1996.
Paul’s research interests include Computer Modeling and Simulation, Sustainability, Integrated Ecological Economic Modeling, as well as various aspects in Information Systems (including network security, virtualization and green IT).
In 1993 Dr. Safonov co-founded the Russian Society for Ecological Economics (RSEE), which is a regional chapter of the International Society for Ecological Economics. He served as elected RSEE President (1997-2001), and stays on its Board till today.
He has organized over 15 international conferences, and several international research projects, funded by National Science Foundation, European Commission, European Science Foundation, United Nations Statistics Division, German Statistics Office, Belgian Science Office, and Russian Science Foundation. He attended many international symposia and gave invited research seminars and lectures in 40+ universities across Europe and Americas, authored and co-authored over 100 academic publications and conference presentations, including a co-edited book “Modelling in Ecological Economics”, published in the U.K.

In Minnesota he also became active in environmental movement. Dr. Paul Safonov serves on Sustainability Committee of St. Cloud State University, he created classes about the role of Information Systems and Modeling for Sustainable Development, and helped establish and advises the “SCSU Students for Sustainability” club.
